Richard Liu is the founder of JD.com, also known as Jingdong Mall. He is a graduate of sociology at the Renmin University of China, where he specialized in sociology. Before establishing JD.com, Richard worked for more than 10 years with several e-commerce platforms.

In 2004, he founded Jingdong Mall with his friend’s one objective—to provide users with a one-stop shopping experience for high-quality goods at affordable prices. Richard has been behind many milestones that have made JD.com stand out as one of China’s most powerful e-commerce platforms today. JD.com is a leading e-commerce platform in China. Founded in April 2004, it started with a single vendor’s website in Beijing. Now, it is one of the most powerful e-commerce platforms in the country.

However, as the website’s popularity grew, they decided to expand their business to other daily-use items. The same year, Liu Qiangdong and Ding Lei set up their second website named “Houzhu” and started selling consumer goods.

By 2005, they had expanded the reach of their website and entered the food and grocery industry on the platform. In those days, the Chinese e-commerce market was quite small, and a few dozen companies were running online grocery shops. However, their success, coupled with the low entry barrier of setting up an online shop, saw them gain rapid popularity.

Qiangdong is a very popular billionaire in the country and has been recognized for his hard work and achievements by many organizations. In 2015, he was awarded the Most outstanding contribution to the Sino-Foreign Trade award by the Chinese government. The same year, Richard was also appointed as the honorary chairman of the China Entrepreneurs Association.

To mark his contribution to society, Liu donated $1 million to build a school in rural areas of China in 2016. This was his first social contribution as a billionaire.
