Wesley Richard “Wes” Edens is an American businessman, hedge fund manager, and owner of the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association. Wesley R. Edens was born on November 27th, 1956, in San Francisco, California, and grew up in Oregon. He was educated at Oregon State University and obtained a bachelor’s degree in finance and marketing in 1978. Wesley R. Edens then went to business school at Stanford University from 1978-1981, receiving his MBA with distinction.

After obtaining his MBA, Wes Edens went to work for the global investment firm Lehman Brothers from 1981-1994. In 1994 he founded his hedge fund, Pershing Square Capital Management. Wesley R. Edens has been involved in real estate after leaving Lehman Brothers in 1996 and buying three apartment buildings in 1998. One of these buildings is the Carlyle Group Headquarters building which was sold for $632 million in September 2011.

His Achievements

Wes Edens co-founded the global investment firm, The Blackstone Group. The Blackstone Group was founded in 1985 by Peter G. Peterson and Stephen A. Schwarzman, but it wasn’t until 1987 that Wes Edens became the more high-profile partner alongside Mr. Schwarzman. Today, Blackstone manages $262 billion in assets with businesses in private equity, private credit equity, real estate, financial services, and energy.

Wesley R. Edens has also helped with the creation of The Carlyle Group. Wesley R. Edens’ investment firm Pershing Square Capital Management sold a portfolio of investments to The Carlyle Group in 2001 that included two office buildings in New York City. The deal valued the portfolio at $415 million but was split into 35 properties and eventually sold for $632 million in 2011.

Schwarzman, he helped to found The Blackstone Group, which has grown over the past 30 years into one of the best-known private equity firms in the world. Mr. Edens also played a significant role in helping to create The Carlyle Group, one of the largest alternative asset managers in the world, and helped to launch Fortress Investment Group, where he currently serves as Co-Chairman
